Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute students embarked on a journey sparked by a Lego set. At a lunchtime gathering, students united around a model rocket, initially engaging in a fun building activity. This endeavor evolved into the Artemis II Explorers Club, with members closely monitoring the upcoming moon mission and the progress of astronaut Jeremy Hansen, an alumnus of the school in southwestern Ontario.
Gavin Laidman, a student, emphasized the significance of Hansen’s journey, highlighting the notion that one’s origins do not limit their potential accomplishments. Hansen, poised to be the first Canadian to venture near the moon, will be accompanied by NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch on Artemis II’s historic flight path around the moon, marking the first crewed mission to lunar orbit since 1972.
Hansen’s parents, Nancy and Gary Hansen, recently visited Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute on the day NASA announced that Artemis II is scheduled for launch around April 1 after facing several delays. During their visit, they presented a package containing a letter and an Artemis II mission path that their son had forwarded through the Canadian Space Agency to the Explorers Club.
For student Ryan Knox, the Hansens’ visit served as validation for the club’s endeavors, fostering a sense of recognition and connection between the school and the space agency. The Hansens expressed admiration for the students’ dedication and hard work, reflecting on Jeremy’s early passion for space exploration that eventually led to his success as an astronaut.
The teachers played a pivotal role in transforming the club’s initial ideas into a significant initiative, with Jennifer Rowe, a history teacher and staff advisor, guiding the project’s growth. The project transcended mere mission tracking, resonating deeply within the Ingersoll community as a symbol of hope and achievement, particularly for students aspiring to fulfill their dreams through perseverance and effort.
Nancy and Gary Hansen appreciated the students’ enthusiasm, emphasizing the importance of fostering interest and learning among the youth.
