A large warehouse near an outdoor gear store has sparked controversy in Virginia amid the Trump administration’s immigration policies. The British Columbia-based Jim Pattison Group has found itself involved in the situation.
In Hanover County, Virginia, a gathering of hundreds took place at the local administration building on Wednesday evening. The board of supervisors expressed their disapproval of the conversion of the warehouse into a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, overseeing ICE, intends to acquire the warehouse from a property entity of the Jim Pattison Group. The Canadian company stated that it was unaware of the warehouse’s intended use as an ICE holding facility when agreeing to the sale.
Jim Pattison Developments disclosed that the site was listed for lease or sale publicly, and an offer from a U.S. government contractor was accepted. Following this, they became aware of the buyer and the facility’s purpose.
The proposed facility is planned to be a “holding and processing” center, as per a letter from the Department of Homeland Security to Hanover County. The industrial warehouse, spanning 550,000 square feet on a 43.5-acre site, is situated in Ashland, Virginia, near various establishments.
The local board expressed concerns about the lack of communication from the federal government regarding the facility. Despite limited authority to halt the project due to federal exemptions from zoning regulations, the county plans to voice opposition and explore legal options.
Residents voiced contrasting opinions at the meeting, showcasing the political divide in Hanover County. Some supported ICE and President Trump’s policies, while others criticized the treatment of immigrants and protesters by federal forces.
