Democratic Representatives Joaquin Castro and Jasmine Crockett paid a visit to a five-year-old Ecuadorian boy and his father at a federal detention center in Texas. This visit came shortly after the boy was apprehended by federal agents in Minneapolis, sparking outrage over the Trump administration’s immigration policies and bolstering opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions.
During the meeting, Castro and Crockett spent approximately 30 minutes with Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, at the South Texas Family Residential Center near San Antonio. Outside the facility, Texas state police engaged with demonstrators supporting the detained individuals.
A widely circulated photo showed the young boy in a Spider-Man backpack and a blue winter hat while in detention, eliciting strong reactions. Castro characterized the child as a symbol of the harshness of the ICE and detention systems.
According to Castro, Liam’s father expressed concerns about the boy’s well-being, mentioning that Liam has been sleeping a lot, missing his mother and classmates, and expressing a desire to return to school. Castro urged President Trump to consider how he would feel if his own grandchildren were in a similar situation.
The congressional visit was part of efforts by Democrats to showcase the impact of the Trump administration’s immigration policies in Minnesota and other areas leading up to the midterm elections. Liam and his father were taken into custody as part of a broader ICE operation in Minneapolis, which has sparked community unrest and protests.
Neighbours and school officials alleged that federal agents used Liam as bait by instructing him to knock on his home’s door to lure his mother outside. The Department of Homeland Security refuted these claims, stating that the father fled the scene, leaving the child in a running vehicle in the driveway.
A federal judge issued a temporary order preventing the administration from deporting Ramos and Arias as their detention is legally contested. Arias reportedly has a pending asylum claim that allows him to remain in the U.S., with the case assigned to the immigration court at the Dilley detention center.
Following the visit, Castro shared a photo on social media showing Liam in his father’s arms with his eyes closed. Crockett emphasized that Liam was just one of many children they met at the facility who voiced concerns about their education.
Outside the detention center, Texas state police clashed with protesters, deploying chemical irritants and making arrests. Castro criticized Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for overseeing what he described as a lawless immigration enforcement operation resembling a “bounty hunter organization.”
Crockett, who is vying for the Senate nomination, and her Democratic primary opponent, state Rep. James Talarico, have called for Noem’s impeachment. They opposed a DHS funding bill that passed the Republican-controlled House, and some Senate Democrats have threatened to block further funding in response to recent incidents involving ICE agents.
The ongoing debate surrounding immigration enforcement and the treatment of detainees continues to be a contentious issue in the political landscape, with advocates and lawmakers calling for reforms and increased oversight.
