Kerri Einarson’s curling squad engaged in a tough battle but ultimately succumbed 6-5 in an extra round to a bold Swiss team at the women’s world curling championship in Calgary on Tuesday. Switzerland secured their sixth consecutive victory, leading the standings at 6-1, with Canada following closely at 5-1.

Xenia Schwaller triumphed over Olympic silver medalist Silvana Tirinzoni twice in a Swiss championship showdown to earn a spot in Calgary. Einarson acknowledged the fearlessness displayed by the young Swiss team, praising their skills and expressing a desire for future matches against them.

Despite neither team scoring a deuce with the hammer until the 10th end, Canada managed to level the game 5-5, forcing an additional end. In a crucial moment, Schwaller executed a precise draw to secure the win.

The 2024 world junior champions, boasting an average age of 22.5, showcased an 88% shooting percentage compared to Canada’s 81%. Coach John Epping commended the Swiss team’s work ethic and positive attitude, emphasizing their experience in high-stakes competitions leading up to the world championship.

Canada is set to face Turkey (4-2) in the morning and Scotland (3-4) in the evening on Wednesday as they aim to secure a spot in the playoffs. The top six teams at the end of pool play will advance, with the top two earning direct entry into the semifinals on Saturday.

In a challenging match, Canada fell short against Italy with a 9-6 loss in the morning session, under the warm conditions both inside and outside the venue. Einarson highlighted the need for improved weight control and rock placement as they strive for their first world title and aim to maintain Canada’s winning streak in women’s curling.

The Canadian team, consisting of Einarson, Sweeting, Birchard, and Burgess, seeks to continue their impressive performance and uphold Canada’s dominance in women’s curling following Rachel Homan’s consecutive victories.
