Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a worldwide photography contest that celebrates ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photos from researchers across the globe, showcasing animals in their natural habitats, scientists engaged in ecological research, and other natural scenes.
Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the competition’s research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” The image captures Brennan supervising undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, N.B., under the moonlight, emphasizing the curiosity on their faces.
Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, was awarded in the “protecting our planet” category for his image titled “A bridge between past and present.” The photo, composed of 33 drone shots of the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River, illustrates the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the impact of human activities on natural environments.
Photographers believe that images play a vital role in building public trust and empathy towards nature. By showcasing their research through photos, they aim to communicate the value of ecological studies and conservation efforts effectively. Through their visual storytelling, they hope to inspire positive change and raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet’s ecosystems.
