Canada is set to debut in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, marking a historic moment for the country. CBC/Radio-Canada’s recent membership in the European Broadcasting Union has made Canada eligible for the renowned talent competition. With over 130 million global viewers tuning in last year, the Eurovision Song Contest has been a platform for launching the careers of notable artists like ABBA, Céline Dion, and more.

The 71st edition of the Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, in May next year. Prior to the event, Canada must select its representative for the competition. Submissions for potential contestants will open on August 31, welcoming applications from talented individuals across the nation.

CBC’s Executive Vice-President, Doug Smith, expressed enthusiasm for Canadian artists to participate in this prestigious event. The ideal candidate should possess exceptional vocal abilities, captivating stage presence, and original artistry to represent Canada on the global stage.

Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents aged 18 and above. The submission period will run from August 31 to September 9. Interested Canadian artists can find further details on eligibility requirements on the cbc.radio-canada.ca/en/eurovision portal.

After the application deadline, CBC/Radio-Canada will shortlist musicians, and finalists will be revealed in the fall. The selection of the final representative will be determined by a combination of public votes and evaluations from an independent panel of music experts.

The chosen artist will collaborate with industry professionals to create Canada’s official Eurovision song and performance. The Eurovision Song Contest, which began in 1956, has evolved into a global phenomenon with a record-breaking number of participating countries. Notable winners like ABBA and Céline Dion have used the platform to launch successful music careers.

In addition to Céline Dion, several other Canadian musicians have participated in Eurovision, further exemplifying Canada’s growing presence on the international music scene.
