In a Winnipeg courtroom, the family of a man accused of murdering his mother when he was a teenager expressed mixed emotions as a Manitoba judge granted a stay of proceedings in the case. The accused’s lawyer argued for an alternative suspect in the case, pointing to the victim’s co-worker, who had a history of conflict with the victim. Lockyer expressed relief for his client and his family, noting that the accused can now properly grieve for his mother after years of legal battles.
Lockyer, who is the founding director of Innocence Canada, hoped that there would be no appeal, emphasizing that seven years of legal proceedings were already too long. He expressed his belief in the accused’s innocence and his commitment to fighting for justice.
