Conservative House leader, Andrew Scheer, held a brief press conference on Friday morning aiming to shift focus from the Official Opposition’s internal turmoil to the Liberal Party. However, the attention quickly turned to Edmonton Riverbend MP Matt Jeneroux’s unexpected departure from federal politics, which occurred six months after the election and was followed by former Conservative MP Chris d’Entremont defecting to the Liberals just two days later.

Jeneroux reportedly met with Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier in the week, according to a senior Liberal source. Despite Scheer’s attempt to steer the conversation away from internal party matters, questions continued to revolve around the recent developments within the Conservative Party.

Political circles are buzzing with speculation about the implications of these events on Carney’s government and its ability to pass crucial bills like the budget through Parliament. The Conservatives faced setbacks during budget week, with their initial attempt to challenge Carney’s budget failing as some Conservative members abstained from voting.

Leader Pierre Poilievre is now under scrutiny for his leadership and influence over the party, especially after d’Entremont criticized his leadership style upon crossing to the Liberals. Scheer accused the Liberals of pressuring and harassing Conservatives, leading to Jeneroux’s decision to resign.

Addressing concerns about Jeneroux’s meeting with Carney, Scheer dismissed unnamed Liberal sources and accused the Prime Minister of undemocratic practices in seeking to secure a majority through coercive tactics.

While there are no specific regulations against floor-crossing in Canada, the issue remains contentious. The federal ethics commissioner previously cleared a politician for switching parties, but the act has raised questions about the integrity of the democratic process.

Both the Liberals and Conservatives have experienced MPs changing allegiances, with varying reactions to such moves. The recent events have reignited debates about the ethics and implications of floor-crossing in Canadian politics.
