A recent study suggests that some lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes may have been alive for over 400 years, challenging previous beliefs about their lifespan. These ancient-looking, armored fish, which can reach up to two meters in length and weigh up to 180 kilograms, are facing endangerment in the Great Lakes region, with Ontario listing them as a species at risk.
Decades of data on captured and recaptured lake sturgeon across the Great Lakes were analyzed in the study. It was found that traditional age estimation methods, based on growth rings in the fish’s fin rays, may have underestimated their longevity. By tracking individual sturgeon growth over the years, researchers discovered that some of these fish could potentially live for centuries.
The findings have significant implications for conservation efforts. Trevor Pitcher, a biologist at the University of Windsor, emphasized the need to reevaluate conservation strategies for lake sturgeon, considering their potential multi-century lifespan. He highlighted the importance of restoring their habitats and populations, as sturgeon play a crucial role in balancing the ecosystem by preying on invasive species.
Pitcher’s team is actively involved in training individuals in different regions to raise lake sturgeon, aiming to bolster their numbers across the Great Lakes. The cultural significance of sturgeon was also highlighted by Perry McLeod-Shabogesic, an elder from Nipissing First Nation, who views these fish as esteemed elders in Anishinaabe tradition due to their longevity and historical significance.
The study’s results have sparked discussions on the long-term conservation strategies needed to protect these ancient fish species effectively. It underscores the importance of understanding and adapting conservation efforts to ensure the survival of lake sturgeon populations for generations to come.
