The ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation has initiated a series of scientific and economic research projects focusing on Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake as part of a comprehensive water stewardship plan. This initiative has sparked discussions regarding recreational boating activities in the region.

Chief Donald Sam of ʔAkisq̓nuk emphasized the significance of stewardship to the Ktunaxa people, highlighting the necessity of credible data for informed decision-making. The First Nation is investing $200,000 in mapping the East Kootenay lakes, evaluating shoreline conditions, sediment movement, and assessing the economic impact of recreational activities.

These stewardship deliberations have raised concerns among some residents who worry that potential restrictions could negatively impact the local economy. Chief Sam reassured that economic development is not opposed; rather, the goal is to identify sustainable recreational practices that align with the long-term health of the lakes.

The studies coincide with increased scrutiny of wake-surfing boats, known for generating large wakes through ballast systems. Critics argue that these boats disrupt sediment, damage shorelines, and contribute to environmental degradation, particularly in shallower lakes like Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake. Community groups like Lake Windemere Ambassadors advocate for responsible boating practices to mitigate these environmental impacts.

Mayor Al Miller of the District of Invermere expressed support for a science-based approach to address the issue, emphasizing the importance of balancing economic considerations with environmental concerns. He underscored the need to make informed decisions based on comprehensive data rather than hearsay.

Chief Sam clarified that the stewardship planning process is in its early stages, with no immediate restrictions planned for this summer. He emphasized the importance of community and public engagement throughout the process, aiming to develop a long-term lake stewardship strategy that harmonizes environmental preservation with economic prosperity.

The nation’s objective is to formulate a holistic lake stewardship plan that considers both economic interests and environmental conservation. Through these studies and a deeper understanding of economic values, Chief Sam envisions a sustainable future for the lakes.
