Valerie Grenier faced a setback in the Mont-Tremblant alpine skiing World Cup’s second leg after her success on Saturday. Julia Scheib from Austria claimed victory in the giant slalom event on Sunday, while Grenier, hailing from St-Isidore, Ont., veered off course near the end of her first run, following her bronze win the previous day.
Discussing her run, Grenier mentioned misjudging a turn which caused her to almost perform a 180-degree turn. Despite her mistake, Grenier was on track for a strong performance, closely trailing leaders Alice Robinson and Scheib. Scheib clinched the win with a time of 2:13.00, securing her third giant slalom medal of the season.
Although disappointed with her error, Grenier acknowledged skiing well and expressed optimism for upcoming races. Meanwhile, Robinson, who won Saturday’s giant slalom, finished third after a late mistake in her run.
In the competition’s final moments, Scheib’s impressive second run challenged Robinson, who ultimately slipped to third place due to a costly error. Sara Hector from Sweden claimed second place, with Robinson settling for third. Canadian skier Britt Richardson finished 12th overall, pleased with her performance but aiming for more consistency in her races.
Scheib’s victory narrowed the gap in the giant slalom standings, with Robinson leading by 12 points. The day also saw Mikaela Shiffrin maintain her lead in the overall standings.
