Susanna Tapani netted the decisive goal with 9:40 left on the clock, leading the Boston Fleet to a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Sceptres in Professional Women’s Hockey League action on Saturday. Abby Newhook and Alina Mueller also found the back of the net for Boston (2-0-0-0), with Aerin Frankel making 24 saves. Toronto’s lone goal came from Blayre Turnbull, with Raygan Kirk stopping 10 shots.

Turnbull kicked off the scoring with a short-handed goal in the first period, while Newhook tied the game in the second period after a hustle play led to a goal off a rebound. Tapani then secured the win for Boston in the third period. Despite dominating possession, Toronto struggled to convert chances into goals, with their power play failing to capitalize.

The Sceptres were without star forward Daryl Watts due to injury, and their power play, previously strong, struggled, going 0-for-6 in the game. The Fleet, on the other hand, showcased a strong defensive performance, limiting Toronto’s high-danger chances.

Toronto coach Ryan acknowledged the need for offensive improvement, emphasizing the importance of composure and offensive contribution from all players. The Sceptres will look to bounce back against the Ottawa Charge, while the Fleet will face the Vancouver Goldeneyes in their next matchups.

In a separate game, the New York Sirens defeated the Vancouver Goldeneyes 5-1, with five different players scoring for New York, including top draft pick Kristyna Kaltounkova. Vancouver’s Sophie Jaques and New York’s Anne Cherowski also contributed to the scoring. New York’s strong start was highlighted by a goal from rookie Nicole Vallario early in the game.

Vancouver will face Boston next, while New York is set to play against the Seattle Torrent in their upcoming matches.
