Santiago López, a 20-year-old dual national from Canada and Mexico, aspires to compete in the FIFA World Cup, a dream he has harbored since his early school days. Despite his current stint with Pumas UNAM in Mexico City, López’s heart remains tied to Canada, where his soccer journey began. Expressing his admiration for the Canadian squad, he aims to represent Canada in the upcoming World Cup.

Born in Morelia, Mexico, López moved to Oakville, Ontario, at the age of four. Unlike many athletes from sports-oriented families, López was the trailblazer in his pursuit of a sporting career, inspired by watching soccer legends like Messi and Cristiano. His soccer journey commenced in Canada with the Oakville Soccer Club, where he honed his skills under the guidance of Steven Killeen, an experienced coach who lauds López’s technical prowess and positive attitude.

After returning to Mexico in 2015, López joined the youth academy of Pumas UNAM, catching the eye of the Canadian national team through his standout performances. Andrew Olivieri, the men’s youth director for Canada, recalls the ease with which López was integrated into the national program based on his exceptional talents showcased in videos. López’s defining moments on the field, such as his crucial goal in a challenging match against Panama, exemplify his potential and determination.

Despite the challenges ahead, López’s inclusion in the Canadian national team for the World Cup remains a distinct possibility, with Olivieri envisioning a bright future for the young talent. López, however, remains grounded, focusing on his daily progress with Pumas UNAM and viewing national team selection as a reward for his hard work. In memory of his late father, who instilled in him the belief that dreams are achievable through dedication, López continues to push himself towards his aspirations.
