The largest First Nation community in Manitoba is bracing for an anticipated spring flood of severe proportions, prompting a request for assistance from the Canadian military. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew disclosed the urgency of the situation, highlighting the potential threat facing the Fisher River area as predicted by the provincial flood forecasting center.

To ensure swift mobilization and response efforts, the province has allocated $1 million to Peguis, preempting any financial hindrances that could impede the community’s readiness for the impending rise in water levels next week. Emphasizing the need for immediate action, Kinew stressed the importance of securing resources and manpower to fortify homes with sandbags and address any other essential needs within the community.

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Canada’s emergency management minister, Eleanor Olszewski, confirmed approval of the province’s plea for assistance. The federal government is dispatching humanitarian aid and collaborating closely with the First Nation and Manitoba authorities. Indigenous Services Canada is extending direct support to the community in preparation for the looming flood threat.

Peguis Chief Stan Bird urgently appealed to the federal government for aid in preparing for potentially catastrophic flooding akin to the devastating 2022 deluge. Citing the pressing need for intervention, Bird highlighted the limited timeframe available for response once runoff water begins to flow, underscoring the critical necessity of involving the Canadian Armed Forces promptly.

The Hydrologic Forecast Centre of Manitoba has identified multiple risk factors contributing to the heightened flood risk in the Fisher River basin, including an unusually high snowpack, delayed melting, and anticipated spring precipitation. The center’s projections suggest that peak flows could escalate to levels comparable to the 2014 flood, with the potential for even more severe conditions resembling those witnessed in 2022, which resulted in widespread evacuations and states of emergency.

In anticipation of the impending flood threat, Peguis has initiated preparatory measures, including the removal of ice from the sports multiplex rink to accommodate potential housing needs for residents. However, challenges persist due to adverse weather conditions, with frozen sandbags hindering protective measures around houses and necessitating meticulous groundwork preparation before deployment.

Efforts are underway to expedite the delivery of 1 million to 2 million sandbags to Peguis, with collaboration between the province, Indigenous Services Canada, and Team Rubicon Canada, an organization predominantly comprising military veterans. Team Rubicon Canada is mobilizing volunteers to support the community in sandbagging operations and safeguarding critical infrastructure in preparation for the impending flood.

Peguis has long advocated for permanent flood protection funding from provincial and federal authorities, with Manitoba committing to addressing the community’s flood mitigation needs. As the community braces for potential flooding reminiscent of past disasters, Chief Bird emphasized the collective efforts required to bolster their defenses against the looming crisis.
