Canadian distance runner Ben Preisner is set to make a comeback at the Canadian cross-country championships in London, Ont., this weekend. Preisner, seeking a break from his marathon training routine, is prepared to face tough competition, including top athletes like Philippe Morneau-Cartier, Phil Parrot-Migas, and Connor Black, the reigning national champion. Notably, Moh Ahmed, one of Canada’s most successful distance runners, has also entered the event, adding more excitement to the competition.

The championships will feature a challenging 10-kilometre race on a grassy course with varying terrains and obstacles like hay bales. Preisner, a seasoned athlete who transitioned from track events to marathons, acknowledges the level playing field that cross-country offers, where track speed doesn’t always guarantee success on grass and mud surfaces.

Ahmed, a four-time Olympian, will test his calf injury in the upcoming race after a long break from competition. His participation has sparked interest and anticipation among fellow competitors and fans. A strong performance from Ahmed and other top finishers could secure them spots at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Fla., on January 10.

Preisner expects a tightly contested race, predicting strategic moves and fierce competition, especially in the later stages. While Ahmed’s racing plans remain uncertain, his talent and experience command respect from his peers. Despite a recent training switch and injury setbacks, Ahmed’s former teammate Justyn Knight expresses confidence in Ahmed’s abilities and looks forward to his performance in the cross-country event.

For Preisner, the championships offer a chance to enjoy a different style of racing and reconnect with his roots. Coming off a successful season, Preisner aims to assess his strength in the upcoming race, with an eye on major marathons in the near future. His focus is on competitive racing rather than chasing qualifying times, signaling a shift in his athletic goals.
