Emily Bogen’s family reached out for help when they noticed her struggle with prescription drug addiction and neurological issues due to Lyme disease. Seeking specialized care, they found a treatment center operated by Nomina Wellness on Vancouver Island. However, their hopes were shattered as the promised tailored treatment plan and one-on-one care failed to materialize despite the hefty cost.

The problematic experience at Nomina’s treatment facilities in Courtenay, B.C., including a tragic overdose death in 2024, sheds light on the inadequacies of for-profit residential substance use treatment centers in Canada. These privately owned facilities operate with minimal government oversight, endangering patients’ lives.

The lack of regulations governing these facilities is a widespread concern, with little emphasis on staff qualifications and treatment standards. Lisa Lapointe, former B.C. chief coroner, advocates for better oversight in the recovery industry, emphasizing the need for standardized regulations to ensure patient safety.

The distressing incidents at Nomina and Muskoka Recovery in Ontario underscore the risks associated with unregulated private treatment facilities, where patients may not receive appropriate care from unqualified staff. The absence of tracking patient outcomes further complicates accountability and highlights systemic failures in the treatment system.

Critics highlight the urgent need for stricter regulations to prevent exploitation and harm in vulnerable individuals seeking treatment. The call for government intervention to establish comprehensive oversight and enforce standards in private addiction treatment centers is crucial to safeguarding patients’ well-being.
