The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has announced the charging of a consultant for allegedly engaging in fraudulent billing practices with the federal government. Andrew McDermott, aged 62, along with his company, AM Government Consulting Inc., are facing two charges of fraud exceeding $5,000 each.
According to an RCMP press release, an investigation initiated by Public Services and Procurement Canada in 2021 focused on a federal consultant involved in various contracts with Shared Services Canada managed by different private sector entities. The inquiry revealed that the consultant had allegedly submitted false timesheets leading to excessive billing from May 2020 to June 2022.
After the findings were reported to the RCMP, it was confirmed that the consultant had misrepresented billing information on multiple contracts with the government. In a related development, Public Services and Procurement Canada identified three subcontractors suspected of engaging in fraudulent billing practices in 2024, resulting in the suspension of their security clearances.
