A landslide struck Indonesia’s Java island early in the morning due to heavy rains, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals and leaving 82 others missing. The incident occurred in Pasir Langu village, West Bandung district of West Java province, where 34 houses were buried under mud, rocks, and trees as rivers overflowed their banks following days of torrential rainfall.
Rescuers are working diligently to locate the missing residents, with 24 individuals managing to escape the disaster. Abdul Muhari from the National Disaster Management Agency reported that eight bodies were recovered in Pasir Kuning, the most severely affected area. The rescue efforts are being hampered by the unstable ground and persistent rain, making the search operation challenging.
Television broadcasts showed workers and locals frantically digging through the mud in Pasir Langu, where the once picturesque village was transformed into a muddy disaster zone. Teten Ali Mungku Engkun, in charge of West Java’s Disaster Management Office, highlighted the difficulties caused by the adverse weather conditions.
As a precautionary measure, families residing within 100 meters of the landslide site have been evacuated, and residents in landslide-prone regions have been advised to remain alert and evacuate promptly if they notice any signs of danger. This incident follows catastrophic floods and landslides in Sumatra last December, which claimed the lives of over 1,200 people and injured thousands.
Indonesia, with its numerous islands and mountainous terrain, is prone to seasonal flooding and landslides, especially during the rainy season from October to April. Recent history includes a tragic event in Central Java province last January, where more than 20 individuals lost their lives to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains.
