Last year, sales representative Ryan Crumly anticipated a surge in farmers adopting drone technology once it was permitted for spraying insecticides and fungicides on crops. His prediction seems to have come true. In late June, Health Canada removed restrictions to allow drones to spray approved pesticides, leading to a spike in demand for the technology. Crumly, employed at Titan Aero Drones, mentioned that the policy change resulted in a significant increase in inquiries, with approximately 80 drones selling out within days.
Farmers and drone dealers are enthusiastic about this policy alteration, highlighting the advantages of drones over traditional ground sprayers and planes. The adoption of pesticide-spraying drones is projected to be substantial, with many farmers expressing interest in acquiring one in the near future.
Pesticide-spraying drones are being praised for their various benefits. They outperform planes and helicopters as they can operate at night and maneuver closer to obstacles like trees and power lines. Additionally, some farmers this year showed interest in drones due to ground sprayers getting stuck in muddy fields during flooding.
According to Crumly, drones are user-friendly. Farmers can program the drone’s spraying routes, and the device can operate autonomously for the most part. Greg Hill, a farm and ranch owner in southeast Saskatchewan, believes that drones will revolutionize agriculture by avoiding crop damage caused by ground sprayers. Despite the initial investment required, the operational costs of drones are significantly lower compared to traditional sprayers.
Although the price of spray drones can be high, they are relatively cheaper than ground sprayers in the long run. Farmers are cautious about the additional costs associated with owning a drone, such as maintenance and licensing requirements. However, many, like Hill and Raymond Phillips from Alberta, are considering investing in a drone in the next few years as the technology advances and becomes more cost-effective.
