A massive storm wreaked havoc across the United States over the weekend, leading to the cancellation of thousands of flights and threatening extensive power outages and dangerous road conditions.

Approximately 180 million people were under a winter storm warning spanning from New Mexico to New England. The U.S. National Weather Service issued alerts for heavy snow and a significant ice swath from east Texas to North Carolina. Reports indicated up to six millimetres of ice in certain parts of southeastern Oklahoma, eastern Texas, and sections of Louisiana by midday Saturday.

Meteorologist Allison Santorelli from the National Weather Service highlighted the unprecedented nature of the storm, emphasizing the prolonged cold spell following it, which would impede recovery efforts due to slow snow and ice melting.

President Donald Trump declared emergency declarations for multiple states by Saturday, with more anticipated. The Federal Emergency Management Agency strategically positioned resources and personnel in various states, as stated by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, urging people to stay home if possible.

In the wake of the storm, Southern states scrambled to restore power lines, while Eastern states issued stern warnings to residents. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill cautioned citizens about an impending severe storm and introduced travel restrictions and speed limits on highways, advising people to stay indoors.

Power outages hit Louisiana and Texas severely, with forecasters comparing the damage potential to a hurricane. The storm caused about 140,000 outages, with Louisiana and Texas bearing the brunt, as reported by poweroutage.us. In Shelby County, Texas, ice-laden trees led to power line failures, affecting a significant number of electric customers.

Reports from affected areas described the challenges of fallen trees and power lines, with vehicles colliding with debris in Louisiana and significant power disruptions. Crews worked tirelessly to clear roads and restore services amidst the chaos.

The aviation sector faced substantial disruptions, with over 13,000 flights canceled over the weekend in the U.S. Sunday witnessed a record number of cancellations since the pandemic began, affecting major airports like Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and causing widespread travel chaos.

Georgia officials issued a stern warning about an impending ice storm, urging residents to stay off roads and prepare for prolonged isolation. The state’s meteorologist highlighted the unprecedented nature of the storm, emphasizing the dangers posed by ice accumulation.

As the storm progressed towards the Northeast, authorities advised extreme caution, encouraged residents to stay indoors, and emphasized safety measures to mitigate risks associated with the severe weather conditions.
