Duncan McDonald, a 25-year-old defender-midfielder hailing from Powell River, B.C., has been honored as Canada Soccer’s Para player of the year for the second consecutive year. This prestigious accolade is determined by the Canadian Para team coaches.

During the IFCPF Copa America held in October in Moldonado, Uruguay, McDonald showcased his skills in the backline, leading Canada to a commendable fourth-place finish. Stepping into a leadership role, McDonald took charge as captain in the absence of Samuel Charron, a four-time Para player of the year, who was recovering from his second Achilles tendon injury.

In a statement, Para head coach Drew Ferguson praised McDonald’s exceptional leadership qualities both on and off the field. McDonald’s remarkable performance at the 2025 IFCPF Copa America, where he played every minute of every match as a centre back, stood out as he topped the tournament in tackles and blocked shots.

Having debuted in Canada’s Para program at the age of 15, McDonald has amassed 37 caps, including 34 starts, with four goals and six assists to his name. His consistency and talent have solidified his reputation as a top player in the Para category.

The list of past Para player of the year winners includes notable names such as Samuel Charron, Damien Wojtiw, Jamie Ackinclose, Trevor Stiles, Liam Stanley, and Brendon McAdam, showcasing the rich history of talent in Canadian Para soccer.
