The director of the Louvre museum announced plans for enhanced security measures following a recent jewel heist. Laurence des Cars stated that approximately 100 new surveillance cameras will be operational by the end of next year, alongside anti-intrusion systems set to be installed within two weeks.
Describing the systems as tools to deter intruders from approaching the museum buildings, she emphasized the aim of ensuring comprehensive protection of the museum’s surroundings. During a meeting with France’s Committee of Cultural Affairs of the National Assembly, des Cars highlighted the necessity for swift action post the shocking incident.
The implementation of over 20 emergency measures was disclosed, including the introduction of a security coordinator role, with the position recently advertised. The security breach on October 19, where thieves swiftly stole crown jewels valued at 88 million euros within minutes, prompted the need for these upgrades.
New insights into the robbery revealed that the robbers utilized disc cutters designed for concrete to breach display cases, a method unforeseen during the case redesign in 2019. Des Cars emphasized the importance of security enhancements within the “Louvre New Renaissance” plan, estimated to cost up to 800 million euros, aiming to modernize infrastructure and enhance security by 2031.
Due to the strain of mass tourism, the Louvre has restricted daily visitors to 30,000 in recent years. The iconic glass pyramid, initially designed for four million annual visitors, has already welcomed over eight million visitors this year. Des Cars noted that the museum’s 1980s modernization is now outdated, with equipment functioning beyond its intended lifespan.
In response to structural concerns, the Louvre announced temporary closures of select offices and a public gallery due to fragility. The ongoing efforts underscore the museum’s commitment to fortifying security and preserving its cultural heritage amidst evolving threats.
