The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, expressed shared concerns with the United States regarding Arctic security at the World Economic Forum in Davos. She warned that if President Donald Trump proceeds with imposing new tariffs over the Greenland dispute, the EU’s response would be resolute and unified.

Trump’s announcement of planned tariffs on eight countries that sent military personnel to Greenland sparked tensions, as his administration has expressed interest in acquiring the Arctic island. Despite resistance from Greenland, Denmark, and allies, Trump’s ambitions have faced criticism, with polls showing limited American support for such actions.

Von der Leyen emphasized the importance of honoring agreements, citing the trade deal between the EU and the U.S. last summer. The social media uproar following Trump’s threats prompted European leaders to consider countermeasures, including potential retaliatory tariffs and utilizing the EU’s anti-coercion instrument.

Trump’s provocative social media posts and interactions with world leaders have escalated tensions. Macron’s refusal to engage with Trump on Greenland reconstruction and the EU’s readiness to employ strong measures against U.S. coercion reflect the strained transatlantic relations.

Denmark remains open to discussing issues related to Greenland, despite Trump’s administration questioning its territorial claims. The strategic importance of Greenland, situated between Europe and North America, has intensified the geopolitical significance of the region, particularly in terms of missile defense and mineral resources.

Von der Leyen stressed the need for Europe to enhance its autonomy amidst shifting global dynamics, advocating for closer security cooperation with key partners such as Canada, Iceland, Norway, and the United Kingdom. Russia, through Foreign Minister Lavrov, asserted its non-interference stance in Greenland affairs but questioned the island’s status under Danish sovereignty.

The EU, alongside other targeted countries, is assessing the implications of Trump’s tariff threats. California Governor Gavin Newsom called on European leaders to stand firm against Trump’s actions, urging them to demonstrate resilience and unity in response to the escalating tensions.
