A federal employee at Global Affairs Canada has been cleared of all 11 charges against him by the Ontario Court of Justice.

Galal Eldien Ali was acquitted of multiple charges of sexual assault involving a former Afghan interpreter he worked with at Camp Nathan Smith military base in Afghanistan between 2011 and 2013, and who later resided at his Canadian home.

Ali has consistently denied the allegations. Justice Dave Berg, ruling from the bench, dismissed all charges due to credibility issues without providing written explanations.

The identity of the woman making the accusations is protected by a publication ban.

Ali, a former technical adviser in Kandahar with the Canadian International Development Agency, faced a civil suit seeking $1.75 million in damages from the same interpreter. The impact of the court’s decision on the civil case and the possibility of an appeal remain uncertain.
