Firefighters in Norwalk, Connecticut, successfully rescued a swan trapped on the frozen Connecticut River after concerned citizens reported the situation. Jonathan Maggio, the deputy chief of the Norwalk Fire Department, led the rescue operation, which involved 23 individuals from the fire department and a local wildlife rescue group.
The swan, a male seeking shelter from the winter weather, had become stuck under a bridge where the water had frozen around its feet. The rescue team used ropes, ladders, and cold water suits to reach the swan, who nervously lifted its wings as they approached. Maggio encouraged his team to show compassion, and within moments, the swan seemed to understand they were there to help.
The rescuers carefully chipped away at the ice surrounding the swan, wrapped it in blankets, and transported it to a veterinary center for treatment. The swan, now affectionately named Clancey, was cold-stunned and dehydrated upon arrival but is expected to make a full recovery. Veterinary staff melted the ice off Clancey’s feathers and skin, providing him with fluids and warmth.
Maggio, reflecting on his 30 years of rescue work, expressed pride in the successful operation, noting that not every rescue mission ends as positively. The team’s efforts in saving Clancey from the icy river have left them feeling accomplished and grateful for the opportunity to make a difference.
