Stephen Gogolev faced a challenging journey in figure skating, contemplating leaving the sport due to persistent back injuries that hindered his performance. However, a triumphant season has propelled him towards a possible spot in the upcoming Winter Olympics.
Recently crowned as the national champion at the Canadian figure skating championships, Gogolev expressed the significance of his victory as a symbol of overcoming past struggles. His captivating performance to Sergei Rachmaninov’s “Piano Concerto No. 2” showcased his skill with two quad jumps and seven triples, accumulating a total score of 275.50, following an impressive short program.
Reflecting on his tumultuous past, Gogolev acknowledged doubts that plagued his mind during years of setbacks, including doubts about continuing his skating career. This season, however, marked a turning point as he competed in all his events, notably against Roman Sadovsky, with both skaters vying for Canada’s lone men’s singles spot in the upcoming Winter Games.
Gogolev’s exceptional international scores this season have positioned him favorably for selection to the Olympic team. Meanwhile, Sadovsky clinched the silver medal at the championships, expressing emotional gratitude amid the intense competition.
In the women’s event, Minsol Kwon emerged as the front-runner after the short program, closely followed by Gabrielle Daleman and Sara-Maude Dupuis. The reigning national champion, Madeline Schizas, despite a minor setback, remains a strong contender for Canada’s women’s singles spot at the Olympics.
Additionally, ice dance duo Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier shone in the rhythm dance segment, leading with a stellar performance to RuPaul’s “Supermodel (You Better Work).” The pair, aiming for their third Olympics, displayed a remarkable connection with the audience, setting a personal best at the national championships.
The intense competition also unfolded in the pairs category, with Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps showcasing their prowess after claiming the top spot in the short program.
