Former high-ranking officials of the Canadian Armed Forces are defending the planned purchase of 88 American F-35 fighter jets, aiming to halt discussions between the Canadian government and Swedish company Saab. A group of twelve former senior officers of the Royal Canadian Air Force sent a letter to federal authorities emphasizing the advantages of procuring a complete fleet of F-35s to meet Canada’s military requirements. They seek to prevent a reduction in the F-35 order by the Canadian government and the potential replacement with Gripen-E fighter jets from Saab, which has pledged substantial job creation in Canada.
The confidential letter was dispatched on Monday to key government decision-makers, including the office of Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney initiated a review of the procurement of F-35s from American firm Lockheed Martin in response to security concerns raised by U.S. President Donald Trump. While Canada is in the process of acquiring at least 16 F-35 aircraft, a decision on the full fleet of 88 jets ordered in 2023 is pending.
Among the signatories of the letter is Tom Lawson, who served as the Canadian Armed Forces’ chief of the defence staff from 2012 to 2015. Lawson, in an interview with CBC News, refrained from discussing the letter but expressed reservations about the potential purchase of Gripen fighter jets. He highlighted the unmatched quality of the F-35, stating that no other aircraft in the market could rival its capabilities, making any cost savings from opting for an alternative fleet negligible in combat scenarios.
Lawson acknowledged the government’s interest in diversifying military equipment sources beyond the U.S. but cautioned against reducing the F-35 procurement as a means of signaling to American suppliers. While he previously worked as a consultant for Lockheed Martin, Lawson clarified that his current stance aligns with his views during his military tenure.
F-35 jets, according to Lawson, offer superior stealth features, radar evasion capabilities, and advanced data integration for enhanced situational awareness.
