Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, the son and former heir apparent of Libya’s late dictator Moammar Gadhafi, has been reported dead in the country of Libya, as confirmed by Libyan officials on Tuesday. The 53-year-old was fatally shot in Zintan, a town located 136 kilometers southwest of the capital city Tripoli, according to the Libyan chief prosecutor’s office. While initial investigations have revealed that Seif al-Islam was shot to death, further details surrounding the circumstances of his demise remain undisclosed.
Khaled al-Zaidi, a lawyer representing Seif al-Islam, confirmed his death on social media platform Facebook, without providing specific information. Additionally, Abdullah Othman Abdurrahim, who represented Gadhafi in a United Nations-brokered political dialogue aimed at resolving Libya’s longstanding conflict, also announced the demise on Facebook.
Seif al-Islam’s political team released a statement alleging that he was killed by “four masked men” who invaded his residence in a “cowardly and treacherous assassination.” The statement claimed that he engaged in a confrontation with the assailants, who deliberately disabled the CCTV cameras in an effort to conceal evidence of their actions.
Born in June 1972 in Tripoli, Seif al-Islam was the second son of the former dictator and pursued a Ph.D. at the London School of Economics. He was perceived as the more progressive figure within the Gadhafi regime.
Moammar Gadhafi was overthrown in a popular uprising assisted by NATO forces in 2011 after more than four decades in power. He was subsequently killed in October 2011 during the ensuing conflict that escalated into a civil war. Since then, Libya has descended into turmoil, divided among competing armed factions and militias.
Seif al-Islam was captured by Zintan fighters towards the end of 2011 while attempting to escape to Niger. He was released by the fighters in June 2017 following an amnesty granted by one of Libya’s rival governments. He had been residing in Zintan since then.
In 2015, a Libyan court convicted Seif al-Islam in absentia for instigating violence and the murder of protesters, sentencing him to death. He was also wanted by the International Criminal Court for charges of crimes against humanity related to the 2011 uprising.
In a controversial move in November 2021, Seif al-Islam announced his candidacy for the presidential election in Libya, provoking opposition from anti-Gadhafi factions in both western and eastern Libya. Despite his disqualification by the High National Elections Committee, the election did not take place due to disputes between rival administrations and armed groups that have governed Libya post the overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi.
