Writer-composer Dylan MarcAurele engaged with the popular Canadian TV series “Heated Rivalry” by binge-watching the entire show in one sitting. Intrigued by the romantic moments between hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, portrayed by Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, he envisioned a musical adaptation of the series.

This idea quickly materialized into “Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody,” penned by MarcAurele in a short period. The musical swiftly progressed from concert readings to an off-Broadway debut in New York, generating significant interest among fans of the original book and TV series by Rachel Reid.

Scheduled to coincide with the release of the TV show’s second season in April 2027, the musical parody aims to capture the essence of “Heated Rivalry” through a blend of campy comedy and heartfelt storytelling. Director-producer Alan Kliffer views the production as a tribute to the series, capitalizing on its cultural impact and fan base to create a unique theatrical experience.

Featuring a talented cast led by Jay Armstrong Johnson and Jimin Moon, the musical stays true to the source material while infusing humor and authenticity into the characters. Armstrong Johnson’s commitment to embodying Ilya’s Russian accent with precision reflects the dedication of the entire creative team to honor the original narrative.

Adding a twist to the storytelling, MarcAurele introduces a straight narrator, Susan, played by Ryann Redmond, to provide a fresh perspective on the queer love story at the musical’s core. This unconventional choice has sparked discussions among critics about the portrayal of LGBTQ+ narratives and the inclusion of diverse voices in the production.

As the musical garners positive feedback from early audiences, there is optimism for its success and potential expansion beyond New York. Kliffer envisions bringing the production to Canada, recognizing the show’s Canadian roots and widespread appeal. With hopes of engaging both devoted fans and newcomers to the theater, the team behind “Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody” remains dedicated to celebrating the beloved series in a new and entertaining format.
