The annual gathering of garter snakes at Narcisse, Manitoba, known as the world’s largest snake congregation, is currently taking place slightly later than usual. Tens of thousands of these snakes are emerging from their winter dens in Manitoba’s Interlake region to engage in their mating rituals. Typically occurring in late April, this year’s emergence was delayed due to cooler spring temperatures. Recently, the province confirmed that the snake population was significant enough for interested individuals to observe this natural phenomenon.
According to retired biologist Doug Collicutt, male snakes emerge early to await the arrival of females, leading to a chaotic scene of mating activities. Visitors have the opportunity to witness large groups of snakes forming “mating balls.” Factors such as ground temperature and rainfall influence the timing of the snakes’ emergence.
Despite the weather conditions, around 100 people were exploring the trail connecting the snake dens. One visitor, 12-year-old Liam Warren, observed 59 snakes and expressed surprise at the turnout given the weather conditions. Families, like Liam’s, were present to celebrate Mother’s Day and enjoy this unique experience.
The emergence of the garter snakes lasts approximately a month before they disperse to their summer feeding grounds. These snakes, which primarily feed on leeches, insects, and occasionally small birds, travel significant distances to find food. They eventually return to their dens around early September as fall approaches.
Raelene Sawatzky-Dyck, a “nursery snake interpreter,” explained that the snakes’ return to their dens is believed to be a seasonal pattern, though studying their behavior in detail is challenging due to their small size. It is estimated that between 70,000 to 100,000 snakes inhabit the area during each spring emergence.
Ten-year-old Aiden Schmidt shared his fascination with the snakes’ appearance, describing them as cool creatures with interesting scales. Despite the large numbers of snakes congregating in one area, he found the experience not frightening but rather captivating.
The gathering of garter snakes in Narcisse is a remarkable natural spectacle that attracts visitors from far and wide to witness this unique event.
