New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer was recognized as the NHL’s top rookie for the month of October. Schaefer stood out among rookie players, ranking third in points with three goals and five assists in 11 games. In addition, Vegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel was named the league’s top performer, with Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele earning the second star and Montreal Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes receiving the third star for the month.

Hailing from Hamilton, the 18-year-old Schaefer was the Islanders’ top pick in this year’s draft. He made history as one of the few 18-year-old defensemen to achieve such a high level of points in his first 11 NHL games. Phil Housley, with 11 points in 1982-83, was the only other player to achieve this milestone.

Schaefer beat out stiff competition from fellow rookies in October, including players from the Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, and St. Louis Blues. Despite his young age, Schaefer continues to impress, setting records as the youngest player to earn a point in his NHL debut and the youngest defenseman to score his first goal in over 80 years.

Eichel, fresh off signing a lucrative contract extension, dominated the ice with eight goals and 11 assists in 11 games, leading the Golden Knights to a strong start. Scheifele also shined, becoming the all-time scoring leader for Winnipeg with nine goals in his first 11 games. Dobes, the 24-year-old Czech goalie for the Canadiens, boasted an impressive 6-0-0 record in October, with outstanding statistics and crucial saves for his team.

The NHL’s top performers in October showcased exceptional talent and skill, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
