Italy’s women’s hockey team, playing as Olympic hosts, secured a remarkable 3-2 victory over Japan in Milan, earning them an unexpected spot in the quarterfinals. The emotional win saw Canadian general manager Daniele Sauvageau and former Canadian gold-medalist Laura Fortino, now part of the Italian team, overcome with tears of joy.

Sauvageau, a respected figure in hockey and the manager of Montreal Victoire, was tasked three years ago with building a competitive team in Italy, a country with limited women’s hockey resources. With less than 500 registered female players and no ice rink in Milan, the challenge was significant. However, Sauvageau believed in the team’s potential and set out to recruit talent globally.

Fortino, who had represented Canada in the past, made the decision to play for Italy, committing to two seasons in the Italian league. Her dedication paid off as she contributed to the team’s success, expressing pride in being part of the historic journey. The team’s progress was further supported by players like Kayla Tutino and Gabriella Durante, who made significant contributions to Italy’s victories.

Under the guidance of head coach Eric Bouchard and his team, including assistant coach Pier-Alexandre Poulin, the Italian squad underwent intensive training in Montreal, focusing on skill development and instilling a winning mentality. The team’s unexpected success has not only surprised the hockey world but also highlighted the growth and inclusivity of the sport in Italy.

Looking ahead to their final group match against Germany, Italy remains focused on the task at hand, with potential quarterfinal matchups looming. Sauvageau sees each game as an opportunity to further elevate Italian hockey and expand its reach. The team’s achievements have garnered newfound support from fans, embodying a victory that transcends the sport itself.
