Japan has issued a warning to its citizens in China to increase safety measures and steer clear of crowded areas amidst escalating tensions between the two largest economies in Asia over statements made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan.
The diplomatic clash was ignited by Takaichi during a session with Japanese lawmakers earlier this month, where she suggested that a Chinese attack on Taiwan jeopardizing Japan’s security could trigger a military response.
This dispute could potentially impact Japan’s economy significantly, as China has advised its citizens against traveling to Japan. Chinese tourists represent the largest group of visitors to Japan, comprising nearly a quarter of all tourists based on official data. Subsequently, stocks related to tourism in Japan experienced a sharp decline following this news.
In response to the escalating situation, over 10 Chinese airlines, including Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines, have offered refunds for Japan-bound flights until December 31. Additionally, Sichuan Airlines has put on hold its plans for a Chengdu-Sapporo route until at least March, as reported by state media.
Efforts to ease the tension were made as a senior Japanese official engaged in discussions with his counterpart in Beijing on Tuesday. However, there was no immediate breakthrough in the talks.
Takaichi’s remarks, made before a parliamentary committee on November 7, highlighted potential scenarios that could trigger a military response from Japan, such as a Chinese naval blockade or other aggressive actions against Taiwan. These comments marked a departure from the stance of previous Japanese prime ministers, who expressed concerns about China’s threats to Taiwan without specifying Japan’s potential response.
China lays claim to Taiwan, a democratic state, and has not ruled out the use of force to assert control over the island, a claim that Taiwan’s government vehemently rejects.
In response to the situation, Japan’s embassy in China has advised its citizens to be cautious and respectful of local customs, urging them to avoid traveling alone and exercise vigilance in their interactions with Chinese individuals. The embassy emphasized the importance of being alert to one’s surroundings and avoiding suspicious individuals or groups.
The escalating tensions have also led to repercussions in trade and cultural exchanges between the two nations. Film distributors in China have halted the screening of at least two Japanese films, including the animated movie “Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Hot! Scorching Kasukabe Dancers” and the manga adaptation “Cells at Work!” as a reflection of the deteriorating sentiments toward Japan domestically.
Apart from the immediate impact on tourism and cultural exchanges, Japan’s heavy reliance on China for essential minerals used in various industries, from electronics to automobiles, has raised concerns about the risks associated with economic dependency on a country that resorts to economic coercion in response to disagreements.
Efforts to address the diplomatic tensions have also involved business leaders, with the heads of Japan’s three business federations meeting with Prime Minister Takaichi to advocate for dialogue as a means to resolve the ongoing crisis.
The strategic importance of Taiwan, located in close proximity to Japanese territory, and the critical sea routes surrounding it, underline the significance of the region for Japan’s trade and security interests. Moreover, Japan hosts the largest contingent of U.S. military forces overseas, further complicating the geopolitical dynamics in the region.
The recent incursion of Chinese coast guard ships into waters near islands controlled by Japan but claimed by China has further heightened tensions. The United States, under the Japan-U.S. security treaty, has reiterated its commitment to defend these islands if they come under attack, emphasizing its support for Japan’s territorial integrity.
In response to the situation, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has criticized the U.S. ambassador’s remarks, labeling them as a “political show with ulterior motives.” The evolving situation underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics and the delicate balance of power in the region.
