Late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert revealed that his planned interview with Democratic candidate James Talarico was removed from airing on Monday night due to concerns from the network about violating regulatory guidelines set by the Trump administration regarding equal time for political candidates. This issue arose just before the start of early voting in Texas primary elections featuring competitive Senate nomination races.

Colbert disclosed on his show, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” that network lawyers directly instructed them not to have Talarico on the broadcast and even prohibited mentioning his absence. However, CBS refuted Colbert’s statement, clarifying that the decision was based on legal advice to avoid potential FCC equal-time rule implications.

Talarico is engaged in a tight race for the Democratic nomination amidst evolving broadcast regulations under the previous administration, impacting media interactions with political candidates. His primary opponent, U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, along with Talarico, has gained national attention through viral social media content.

On the Republican side, incumbent Senator John Cornyn faces a tough challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt. Paxton intensified his campaign with a rally in Tyler, Texas, on Monday evening.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has recently cautioned talk show hosts about providing equal time to political candidates, challenging the traditional exemption granted to talk shows. Colbert’s lengthy interview with Talarico, which was not broadcast but shared online, addressed the evolving guidelines and the network’s stance on the matter.

Talarico shared a snippet of his interview with Colbert online, branding it as “the interview Donald Trump didn’t want you to see.” Meanwhile, FCC Chair Brendan Carr raised concerns about partisan motives in talk show hosting, emphasizing the need for equal opportunities for political candidates.

Colbert’s impending departure from his show in May due to CBS’ financial reasons has raised questions, especially following his critical remarks on Trump’s settlement with Paramount Global. This move prompted scrutiny from senators, suggesting a possible political influence on the show’s cancellation.

As the Texas primary approaches, candidates are vying to secure their party’s nominations, with Talarico, Crockett, Paxton, and Hunt actively campaigning to gain voter support and navigate the changing political landscape in the state.

The GOP primary dynamics are shifting, with Paxton emerging as a prominent figure despite Cornyn’s substantial campaign spending. Republican leaders express concerns about Paxton’s potential candidacy, citing the need for significant resources to defend him in a general election compared to Cornyn.

Cornyn emphasized these concerns during a rally in Austin, highlighting the potential consequences of having Paxton as the Republican nominee in a state that Trump previously carried by a significant margin.
