An unexpected donation has brought renewed hope to a charitable organization in the United States during challenging times. The Trevor Project, a non-profit supporting 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, experienced a surge in calls to its crisis hotlines under the current administration of Donald Trump. However, funding cuts had hindered their ability to handle the increased volume of calls. A significant turning point occurred when author MacKenzie Scott’s philanthropic group reached out with a generous $45 million US donation to The Trevor Project.

Janson Wu, the organization’s senior vice-president of philanthropy, expressed astonishment at the substantial donation, which nearly matches the non-profit’s annual budget of $47 million. This gift also surpasses the $25 million federal funding loss suffered by the organization under the Trump administration. Wu emphasized the critical timing of the donation, noting the challenges faced after the White House terminated funding for the 988 National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s service for specific youth groups that The Trevor Project supported.

Despite the setback caused by the funding cut, The Trevor Project continues to operate an independent hotline, receiving hundreds of thousands of calls annually. Wu highlighted the urgent need to strengthen their crisis services to ensure every call is answered by a compassionate and competent counselor. He mentioned the escalating call volumes, driven by political events impacting the mental health of young individuals, such as the recent U.S. Supreme Court case regarding transgender individuals in sports.

The significant donation from MacKenzie Scott’s philanthropy group, Yield Giving, forms part of a broader $7 billion contribution to non-profits in 2025. Scott is renowned for her unrestricted and substantial donations to various organizations, with previous contributions to The Trevor Project amounting to $6 million in 2020. While she does not request project proposals or applications, research indicates that most recipients manage the gifts responsibly, ensuring long-term benefits.

Wu acknowledged the thorough vetting process conducted by Scott’s team before distributing funds and expressed The Trevor Project’s commitment to leveraging this transformative donation for sustained impact and long-term planning. Reflecting on past organizational challenges, including the removal of a controversial CEO in 2022, Wu emphasized the importance of ensuring the organization’s stability and longevity to fulfill its life-saving mission for generations to come.

As The Trevor Project navigates through these transformative changes, Wu emphasized the heartbreaking nature of the calls they receive and underscored the critical role the organization plays in supporting vulnerable 2SLGBTQ+ youth. Despite the challenges, he finds solace in the progress made in advancing LGBTQ+ rights, emphasizing the importance of their mission in supporting young individuals facing mental health struggles.
