Malindi Elmore achieved a Canadian masters record for women in the 45-49 age group by clocking a time of 2 hours 24 minutes 54 seconds during a marathon in Valencia, Spain. This performance secured her 12th place, beating her previous year’s time by one minute and 21 seconds, and surpassing the previous masters record set by Krista DuChene from March 5, 2023, by 14 minutes.

Elmore, who described the race as another solid marathon experience, reflected on her consistent performance over the past six years, maintaining a time range between 2:23 and 2:28 annually. Despite facing challenges during the race due to unexpected high temperatures and winds, she managed to push through a rough patch at the 25-35 km mark and achieved her goal of finishing under 2:25 by a mere six-second margin.

The marathon was won by Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya in a record-breaking time of 2:14:00, making it one of the fastest marathons globally and the fourth fastest women’s marathon in history. Elmore’s journey to this achievement was not without setbacks, as she battled posterior tibial tendonitis in her right foot earlier in the year, impacting her training leading up to the race.

Elmore, a three-time Olympian, had to withdraw from the World Athletics Championships due to injury but made a strong comeback in Valencia. Her previous notable performances include representing Canada in the Paris Olympic marathon, where she finished in 2:31:08, and achieving a ninth-place finish at the 2021 Olympics in Sapporo, Japan, with a time of 2:30:59, the best Olympic marathon result by a Canadian woman in non-boycott Games.

In the same race, Élissa Legault, another elite Canadian athlete, set a personal best time of 2:29:05, breaking the Quebec record by over four minutes. Legault expressed her excitement at surpassing her previous records and the support she received from the crowd during the race.

Overall, Elmore’s remarkable performance in Valencia solidified her position as a top Canadian marathon runner, showcasing her resilience and determination in the face of challenges.
