The Ontario government allocated more than $7.5 million for promoting the Ring of Fire last year, as per records accessed by CBC News. The advertisement gained visibility during the Blue Jays’ playoff season, emphasizing the province’s development strategies for the mineral-rich region in northern Ontario’s James Bay lowlands.

A disclosure from a freedom of information request disclosed that along with traditional advertising, funds were expended on social media, radio, cinema, and printed materials in 16 different languages. However, NDP mining critic Jamie West pointed out that the campaign failed to address the incomplete status of the project, including the absence of a road and consultation with First Nations.

West criticized the government’s marketing efforts, stating that taxpayer funds were being used to mislead the public about the project’s progress. He suggested that the money could have been better utilized for improving northern infrastructure or other pressing projects such as education and healthcare services.

Premier Doug Ford recently announced an accelerated timeline to connect the Ring of Fire with Ontario’s highways by November 2031, aiming to expedite mineral mining activities in the province. The premier’s office defended the advertisement, highlighting the potential economic benefits and job opportunities it showcased to audiences across Ontario and beyond.

The NDP critic expressed concern over the advertisement causing confusion and frustration among the public by giving the impression that the Ring of Fire project was completed and operational. The ad’s use of misleading stock footage drew criticism from experts, with visuals confirmed to be unrelated to the actual Ring of Fire region.

An auditor general’s report revealed that the province spent a record $112 million on taxpayer-funded advertising last year, with a substantial portion aimed at shaping a positive image of Premier Doug Ford before the snap election. The report also highlighted the significant expenditure on government ads since the Progressive Conservatives took office in 2018, following rule amendments by the previous Liberal government regarding partisan advertising regulations.
