Ottawa-based siblings Hannah and Jared Schmidt excelled at the recent World Cup event held at Craigleith Ski Club near Collingwood, Ont., both securing silver medals. This marked the first podium finish for the duo this season. Hannah, aged 31, claimed her 10th career medal, while Jared, aged 28, achieved his seventh.
In the women’s big final, Hannah finished second behind Swiss skier Fanny Smith, outperforming Italy’s Jole Galli to secure the silver position. Meanwhile, former Olympic and world champion Marielle Thompson from Whistler, B.C., finished in 10th place.
Hannah has notably achieved five top-five finishes this season and currently holds the seventh spot in the World Cup standings with 473 points, with three races left. The dominant force in the women’s field is Sweden’s Sandra Naeslund, leading with 768 points.
On the men’s side, Jared followed his sister’s success by clinching the silver medal in the men’s final, with France’s Youri Duplessis-Kergomard taking the gold and Sweden’s David Mobaerg securing bronze.
Reece Howden from Chilliwack, B.C., the men’s World Cup leader, missed an opportunity to secure his second consecutive Crystal Globe and fourth overall, finishing ninth in the event. Howden currently leads the standings with 872 points, 264 points ahead of Italian skier Simone Deromedis, who won gold at the Milano Cortina Olympics.
Jared, now sitting at seventh place with 373 points in the standings, last reached the podium in February 2025, securing bronze in Veysonnaz, Switzerland.
