U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, previously a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, has announced her resignation from Congress effective January. Greene, in a video exceeding 10 minutes, shared her reasons for stepping down, citing her perpetual lack of acceptance in Washington, D.C., and feeling like she never truly belonged.
Her decision to resign comes after a public fallout with Trump in recent times, triggered by her criticisms of his positions on matters such as files linked to the late Jeffrey Epstein, foreign policy, and healthcare. Trump publicly labeled her as a “traitor” and “wacky,” expressing intentions to support a different candidate against her in the upcoming re-election bid.
Despite being closely associated with the Republican president since launching her political career in 2020, Greene emphasized her enduring loyalty to Trump in the video, while also highlighting the importance of being able to express differing views without facing repercussions.
Initially rising to prominence as a figure in Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement, Greene quickly became a controversial figure in Congress due to her alignment with the QAnon conspiracy theory and association with white supremacists. While facing opposition from party leaders, Trump welcomed her, hailing her as a “real WINNER!”
However, over time, she demonstrated adept legislative skills, aligning herself with then-GOP leader Kevin McCarthy until his ousting in 2023. Trump reacted to Greene’s resignation positively, calling it “great news for the country.” Colleagues like Representative Thomas Massie praised Greene for embodying the qualities of a true representative.
On social media, former Republican House member Barbara Comstock commended Greene’s decision, applauding her for refusing to endure mistreatment and threats to maintain a facade of acceptance. Meanwhile, Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Greene’s shift from a Trump loyalist to a critic, pointing out discrepancies between her words and actions, particularly in her voting record.
