Residents in the north shore of Conception Bay are facing ongoing challenges six months after a devastating fire destroyed close to 200 homes in Kingston. The aftermath of the fire has left a lasting impact, with some individuals falling victim to persistent property crimes committed by a small group of thieves.

Community discussions on social media platforms are filled with images showcasing the stark contrast between the pre-fire and post-fire landscapes, highlighting the charred remains of once-standing homes and the ongoing reconstruction efforts taking place along the shoreline.

However, amidst the rebuilding process, there are reports of theft and burglary incidents that continue to haunt residents. Some have taken to sharing surveillance footage on social media to identify suspects who have targeted their properties.

Kristian Noonan expressed the community’s fear and unease, stating that residents are struggling to find peace as they deal with the aftermath of the fire. Noonan recounted a distressing incident where her family home in Western Bay was burglarized while her aunt was away, resulting in the theft of sentimental jewelry, including a cherished ring and a pair of gold earrings.

Upon reviewing the security footage, Noonan recognized a familiar face that had previously been involved in a burglary in Victoria, where an individual drove a getaway ATV for another thief who stole valuables worth over $50,000.

Cassie Kelloway, whose father was a victim of the Victoria burglary, recognized the same individuals in Noonan’s footage and promptly shared the information with the authorities. Following an investigation, one suspect was apprehended and charged in connection with the theft, although only a fraction of the stolen jewelry was recovered.

The impact of the burglaries extended beyond material losses, with sentimental items such as family heirlooms and keepsakes being among the stolen goods. In response to the escalating crime rates, Noonan and Kelloway initiated a petition urging government officials to address the public safety concerns in the region, enhance police presence, and advocate for stricter measures against repeat offenders.

As the petition gains momentum with nearly 900 signatures, Noonan emphasized that the police have been supportive throughout the ordeal, attributing the challenges to the persistence of criminal activities in the area.

Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey from the RCMP acknowledged the community’s concerns and reassured residents that law enforcement is actively pursuing investigations to hold perpetrators accountable. He emphasized the commitment to building strong cases against offenders and securing convictions to address the rising crime rates.
