A memorable field trip unfolded for students in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., as a group of high school basketball players had a special encounter with Toronto Raptors’ standout RJ Barrett during a recent game in Toronto. The students, who are part of the Algoma District School Board’s Alliance Academy, a program enabling Grades 9 and 10 students to earn high school credit through sports like basketball, including nearly 50 players from Korah Collegiate, Superior Heights, and White Pines, traveled down for the game on Dec. 2.

The connection between the academy and Barrett was facilitated by Jeff Giovanatti, a vice-principal at Central Algoma Secondary School who had previously coached Barrett on Team Ontario. After the game, students gathered courtside for a meet-and-greet session with Barrett. The NBA star engaged with the students, discussing their basketball aspirations while posing for selfies and exchanging high-fives.

One of the students, Tyler Macintosh from Korah, expressed his amazement as a big Raptors fan, stating, “It was amazing. I never thought I’d meet him or any NBA player.” For Eva Robinson from Superior Heights, attending her first Raptors game turned out to be the best trip she had experienced. She highlighted the unexpected opportunity to meet RJ Barrett, along with gaining insights into gameplay.

The Sault students are part of the expanding Alliance Academy, which originated from the Algoma District School Board’s Hockey Canada Skills Academy in 2018 and now covers four other sports: basketball, football, soccer, and mixed martial arts. The program involves nearly 250 students from the city’s three public high schools who dedicate their mornings to honing sports skills while balancing studies in related curriculum courses.

Steve Caruso, the academy principal, emphasized the initiative’s aim to provide more engaging opportunities for students in northern Ontario, leveraging the combination of sports and academics to enhance student engagement. Unlike other academies in the province, the Sault academy focuses on skills development rather than formal team or league play.

Caruso acknowledged the significant community support that made special experiences like attending the Toronto Raptors game possible for the students, emphasizing the role of local businesses that contributed financially to make such trips feasible. The collaborative efforts have been crucial to the program’s success, ensuring students can benefit from unique experiences that enrich their educational journey.
