Saskatoon has been chosen to host the 2027 Brier, marking the 100th anniversary of the men’s curling championship. The centennial festivities are scheduled to commence on February 26, 2027, at SaskTel Centre, marking the seventh time that Saskatoon will be the host city for the Brier. This announcement was made by Curling Canada during a gathering at a local Montana’s BBQ & Bar, the title sponsor of the Brier. Ticket sales for the event may start as early as March.

Steve Turner, the Executive Director of CurlSask, expressed enthusiasm for the milestone event, stating that there is no better place to celebrate the centennial than in Saskatchewan. He emphasized the significance of curling in the province’s culture, noting the strong support and knowledge of the sport among Saskatchewan’s passionate fans.

The last time Saskatchewan hosted the national men’s curling championship was in 2024 in Regina. Over the years, both Regina and Saskatoon have collectively hosted the event 12 times, with Saskatchewan teams securing the title seven times. The most recent Brier victory for Saskatchewan dates back to 1980 when Rick Folk, Ron Mills, Tom Wilson, and Jim Wilson, representing Saskatoon, claimed the championship and later went on to win the world championship that same year.

Mayor Cynthia Block highlighted the opportunity to showcase Saskatoon’s charm and honor the rich curling heritage of the province. She emphasized the deep-rooted connection between individuals and their local curling rinks, citing her own experiences as a “rink rat” with her father in rural Saskatchewan.

The successful bid for hosting the Brier was a joint effort by Discover Saskatoon and Saskatoon Destination Marketing Hotels Inc. The city council had previously approved a funding request of $350,000 to support the bid, with expectations of significant economic benefits for the city. Discover Saskatoon estimates that the event could generate substantial revenue and hotel bookings, contributing to the local economy.

Looking ahead, Discover Saskatoon will provide detailed reports to the city council regarding participation numbers, economic impacts, and event budgets specific to Saskatoon. The 2027 Brier winner will represent Canada at the 2027 World Men’s Curling Championship. As preparations continue for the upcoming Brier, the 2026 edition is scheduled to take place in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, starting on February 27.

The inaugural Brier was held in Toronto in March 1927, with Nova Scotia emerging victorious among eight competing teams. The significance of the 2027 Brier as a milestone event in the championship’s history underscores the anticipation and excitement surrounding this prestigious curling competition.
