After a heavy snowfall forced a three-day closure, schools in the St. John’s area are set to resume classes on Thursday. NLSchools announced the reopening on social media, confirming coordination with busing contractors for improved snow clearing. Regular bus schedules will resume on Thursday.
Parents were advised to exercise caution on the roads and instruct their children against playing on snowbanks near bus stops, roads, or schools. Following over 100 cm of snow accumulation from consecutive major storms, schools in the northeast Avalon had been shut.
Education Minister Paul Dinn supported the municipalities’ decision not to declare a state of emergency, distinguishing this situation from the prolonged Snowmageddon emergency in 2020.
During the closure, some parents like Jennifer Cake spent time outdoors with their children. Cake expressed surprise and slight disappointment over the extended closure, highlighting the inconvenience for working parents without flexibility. Meanwhile, Jeremiah Vallotton, with younger children not yet in school, also found the closures unexpected compared to his own schooling experience.
Both parents made the most of the time with outdoor activities, acknowledging the added stress for families without flexibility during the unexpected break.
