“The Quad God” Ilia Malinin Soars to Third Grand Prix Final Victory

Ilia Malinin, known as “The Quad God,” showcased his exceptional talent by securing his third consecutive figure skating Grand Prix Final victory. Despite a lackluster performance in the short program, Malinin dazzled the audience in Nagoya, Japan, by executing seven quadruple jumps, including a quadruple axel and a quad loop. This remarkable feat earned him a record-breaking free skate score of 238.24 points, leading to an impressive overall total of 332.29 points.

Expressing his satisfaction with his performance, Malinin described it as one of his best skates ever, emphasizing the determination and effort he put into each element. Before the free skate, he had planned to attempt six quads but exceeded his own expectations by delivering an outstanding performance.

Yuma Kagiyama clinched the silver medal with 302.41 points, while Shun Sato secured the bronze with 292.08 points. As an undefeated competitor for over two years, Malinin holds the titles of two-time world champion and three-time Grand Prix Final champion, setting the stage for a promising Olympic debut in Milan Cortina.

In the women’s event, Alysa Liu emerged victorious with a total score of 222.49 points, showcasing her resilience and skill. The competition also witnessed strong performances from Ami Nakai and Kaori Sakamoto, highlighting the intense competition and unpredictability in the lead-up to the Olympics.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates continued their dominance in ice dance, claiming their third consecutive Grand Prix Final title with an impressive score of 220.42 points. Their exceptional performance solidified their status as gold medal favorites at the upcoming Winter Olympics.
