Toronto’s medical officer of health is advising the public to receive flu shots due to an early increase in flu cases among children this season and the unfortunate deaths of three children in eastern Ontario. Dr. Michelle Murti stated on Tuesday that Toronto is experiencing a rapid rise in flu activity, especially among children, with the flu season starting early this year. The predominant strain is influenza A, which has been impacting children more severely. Dr. Murti emphasized the seriousness of the current season, noting an increase in pediatric cases requiring hospitalization and the spread of influenza A to adults and individuals in long-term care facilities.

In eastern Ontario, it was reported on Monday by Ottawa Public Health and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit that three children aged five to nine died this month due to complications linked to the flu. Conversely, no flu-related deaths in children have been reported in Toronto this season, according to Murti, who extended her condolences on behalf of Toronto Public Health to the bereaved families.

Encouraging preventive measures, Dr. Murti stressed the importance of flu vaccination, regular hand hygiene, staying home when feeling unwell, and wearing masks in crowded indoor settings. These precautions are crucial to safeguard children and vulnerable individuals, particularly during holiday gatherings. Flu shots are available free of charge for individuals aged six months and older in Ontario at participating pharmacies and primary care providers. Dr. Murti also advised getting the COVID-19 vaccine simultaneously with the flu shot for added protection.
