An investigation into a workplace safety incident is underway following a tragic event that resulted in the death of one worker and serious injury to another at an oilsands site in northern Alberta. Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is actively looking into the incident that occurred on Jan. 29 near Christina Lake, approximately 150 kilometers south of Fort McMurray.

The workers were involved in unloading a truck when a piece of pipe fell off the vehicle, causing injuries to both individuals. Regrettably, one worker succumbed to their injuries while the other sustained severe harm. The incident took place at the Christina Lake North oilsands site operated by Cenovus.

Cenovus expressed deep sorrow over the incident and offered condolences to the affected workers’ families, friends, and colleagues. Work in the specific area where the accident occurred was halted immediately, although operations at the Christina Lake North site have continued without interruption.

The workers involved were employed by a third-party contractor, as confirmed by officials from Cenovus, a Calgary-based company. The provincial authorities and Cenovus have refrained from disclosing further details, citing the ongoing OHS investigation.

Christina Lake North, previously managed by MEG Energy Corp, was acquired by Cenovus in late 2025. The site has been operational since 2008, utilizing a SAG-D (steam-assisted gravity drainage) method to extract heavy oil and bitumen. Following the takeover, Cenovus has been focused on enhancing capacity and expanding operations.

This incident adds to a series of recent fatalities in Alberta’s oilsands sector, marking the second death in the region in recent weeks. Earlier in January, a contractor at Suncor Energy Inc.’s Fort Hills oilsands mine lost their life when heavy equipment they were operating sank into the muskeg.
