LISTEN | Exclusive interview with Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncherenko:

Oleksiy Goncharenko, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, expresses skepticism about Russia’s intentions for a peace agreement with Ukraine. He looks to U.S. President Donald Trump to exert influence and facilitate a resolution.

Following a meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida, progress towards ending the conflict in Ukraine seemed promising. However, Russia’s accusations against Ukraine, including an alleged attack on President Putin’s residence, have complicated the situation.

Refuting Russia’s claims, Zelenskyy accused Russia of deceit to disrupt peace efforts and fabricate reasons for aggression.

February 2026 marks the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the twelfth year since the illegal occupation of Crimea in 2014.

Goncharenko, an opposition member of Ukraine’s European Solidarity party, shared insights with guest host Paul Hunter on As It Happens regarding the latest developments.

Trump mentioned that peace in the region is closer than ever. Do you share this view?

While I am doubtful due to Russia’s lack of interest in peace negotiations, I hope Trump’s optimism is justified and that a breakthrough can be achieved despite the challenges.
