A man facing second-degree murder charges for the fatal stabbing of Paul Schmidt in front of a Downtown Vancouver Starbucks in March 2023 is now on trial for five weeks. Inderdeep Singh Gosal, dressed in a blue pullover and white collared shirt, entered a not guilty plea in a judge-alone trial at B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver on Tuesday.
During the trial, Crown prosecutor Karin Blok presented graphic CCTV footage of the incident, highlighting the key issue of proving Gosal’s intent to cause harm to Schmidt that could lead to death. The prosecution aims to establish whether Gosal acted recklessly concerning the consequences.
On the day of the incident, Gosal was captured on CCTV boarding the Canada Line SkyTrain from Broadway–City Hall station to City Centre station downtown. He was seen wearing a grey sweatshirt and red pants as he arrived at the Starbucks at the corner of Granville and Pender streets.
The footage showed a verbal altercation between Gosal and Schmidt, culminating in a physical confrontation where Gosal stabbed Schmidt multiple times in the chest. Schmidt collapsed to the ground as Gosal was later apprehended by the police.
The trial is set to continue, with 11 witnesses expected to testify, including eyewitnesses, law enforcement officers, and the medical examiner who conducted the autopsy. The proceedings have reignited discussions surrounding the tragic incident that unfolded in downtown Vancouver.
A key witness, Michael Allan, testified about the events he witnessed inside the Starbucks during the altercation. He recounted hearing commotion and observing the physical struggle between the two men, leading to Schmidt’s sudden fall out of view. Allan’s testimony shed light on the chaotic scene and the distress felt by those present during the violent encounter.
The trial will resume on the following day as the court seeks to unravel the details surrounding the tragic stabbing incident that shook the city.
