Two autonomous sail drones in bright orange are currently floating on Lake Erie as part of a fresh initiative by the U.S. Coast Guard. Launched in May, these drones mark the first deployment in the Great Lakes and come equipped with 360-degree cameras. The U.S. Coast Guard highlighted the drones’ versatile functions in support of search and rescue operations, response to environmental spills, and enforcement activities.

Continuous monitoring of the cameras by U.S. Coast Guard personnel allows for manual adjustments of the drones as needed, without recording any footage. According to Lt. Junior Grade Samuel Rodriguez Garcia from the U.S. Coast Guard, the primary purpose of these drones is to enhance situational awareness rather than conducting surveillance. The drones function as mobile cameras providing real-time insights into ongoing events.

Both U.S. and Canadian agencies, including law enforcement, may access the drone technology through proper channels, according to Garcia, emphasizing the role of the drones in border security and preventing cross-border criminal activities. While the Canadian Coast Guard is not directly involved in the U.S. drone sail program, officials stress the close collaboration between the two agencies in maritime security efforts.

The sail drones are a crucial component of the Great Lakes marine security operation, operating round-the-clock alongside various law enforcement agencies at different government levels. Maintaining a safe distance from vessels, these drones operate exclusively within U.S. waters on the Great Lakes. They are equipped with collision avoidance capabilities and are retrieved from the water when ice begins to form, making the initiative seasonal in nature.
