A breakthrough discovery from the University of Saskatchewan could revolutionize the calving season for beef producers, potentially reducing the labor-intensive process. The innovation involves the adaptation of Cetrorelix, a hormone drug commonly used in human in vitro fertilization (IVF), for use in cattle breeding. Dr. Jaswant Singh, a veterinarian and researcher at the university, along with graduate students Dylan Farmer and Carlos Leonardi, made the discovery during a study eight years ago.

Cetrorelix acts as an ovulation synchronization method, enabling cows to conceive through IVF within a short timeframe, leading to synchronized pregnancies and births. This innovation could significantly shorten the calving period, possibly from two months to one month, reducing labor costs and improving animal management. Dr. Singh expressed enthusiasm about the drug’s potential benefits for farmers, emphasizing the economic advantages of synchronized calving.

Garner Deobald, a beef rancher and marketing manager at BoviGen Genetic Services, the largest bovine reproduction center in Saskatchewan, welcomed the potential of Cetrorelix to enhance breeding practices. If proven effective, the drug could offer a valuable tool for improving breeding outcomes, especially through artificial insemination, leading to better genetic selection and calf production data.

The University of Saskatchewan has applied for a patent for Cetrorelix and is collaborating with pharmaceutical companies to bring the drug to market. Dr. Singh is optimistic about the global impact of this innovation, foreseeing increased adoption of artificial insemination practices in cattle breeding worldwide. He highlighted the drug’s promising results in animals, cost-effectiveness, and progress in meeting regulatory requirements, indicating a positive outlook for its future implementation in the industry.
